What exactly does a book writing coach do? This is a question I’m asked quite often, and the answer is far more comprehensive than simply helping someone write the words. A book writing coach should guide an author through the entire journey, from developing the initial concept and strategy through to writing, publishing, launching and beginning to leverage the finished book.
A world class book begins with a strategy
For me, the most important work often happens long before the author starts writing. We spend time getting clear on what the book needs to achieve, who it is for, what unique intellectual property the author has and how the book will connect commercially to their products, services and broader business. This becomes the book strategy, the foundation that shapes every decision that follows.
When the writing begins
Once the writing begins, my role is to help the author develop their voice, strengthen the reader experience, stay focused and keep moving. I provide feedback as the manuscript develops, help prevent unnecessary tangents and review the complete first draft to identify what is working, what is missing and what needs to be strengthened. From there, we determine the most appropriate publishing pathway and work through the many practical decisions involved in turning a manuscript into a professionally produced book.
Getting ready to launch
As the launch approaches, the focus shifts towards building awareness, preparing the marketing and making sure the book is positioned to create opportunities from the moment it arrives. A good book-writing coach helps the author navigate each of these stages while continually elevating the quality, substance and commercial potential of the book.
In the video below, I take you behind the scenes of how I work with authors from the first conversation through to the arrival of their finished books. Most importantly, I explain why the role of a book-writing coach is not simply to help you finish a book. It is to help you create a world-class book that achieves what you want it to achieve for you, your brand and your business.
