If you want to write a world-class book you need a world-class book writing coach

Man and woman talking with a large image of a book on the side.

Let me start by saying that you don’t need a book-writing coach to write a book. Plenty of people manage to write and publish books entirely on their own.

But there is an enormous difference between getting a book written and creating a world-class book that people want to read, recommend and act upon. There is an even bigger difference between publishing a book and building something that genuinely increases your credibility, creates opportunities and attracts the right clients.

I’ve been a commercial author for 30 years, and my books have always been an integral part of my business. They have taken me around the world, opened extraordinary doors, built trust in what I do and attracted wonderful clients. Today, much of my work involves helping other people achieve the same outcomes in a deeply considered and commercially strategic way.

I’m not teaching this from theory, I’m coaching, mentoring and transferring skills from many years of writing books, from working with traditional publishers, customer publishers, editors, cover designers, audiobook creators, printers and pr and media processionals.

Writing a book is a significant investment of time, energy, money and intellectual effort. It makes sense to get experienced help to ensure that investment produces something worthwhile. Here are ten reasons why.

#1. You learn from someone else’s experience

First-time authors tend to make remarkably similar mistakes. They start writing too soon, try to include everything they know, forget to include frameworks and models, try to write for too many types of readers and and underestimate just how much work is involved and just how easy it is to write a book no one actually reads.

An experienced coach has seen these problems many times before. They can help you avoid the common traps, recognise problems earlier and make better decisions. You are effectively borrowing years of experience instead of learning every lesson the expensive and painful way.

#2. You give your book a clear job

One of the most important questions I ask any aspiring author is: What do you want this book to do for you?

Do you want it to build credibility, attract better clients, create speaking opportunities, capture your intellectual property, support a new product or service, or position you as a leader in your field?

A book without a clear job is mostly hope wrapped in a cover. An experienced coach will help you determine the role your book needs to play long before you start writing it.

#3. You get the foundations right before you begin

Many book problems are not writing problems. They are thinking problems.

You need absolute clarity about who the book is for, what problem it solves, what promise it makes, what makes it different and why you are the right person to write it.

This is why I believe commercial success begins long before you write the first chapter. A coach can help you pressure-test the concept before you invest hundreds or even thousands of hours developing it. This dramatically increases the chance of your book being commercially successful.

#4. You reduce the risk of writing a book no one wants to read

This might sound harsh, but the world is full of books that were deeply important to the author and largely irrelevant to everyone else.

We naturally become attached to our ideas, which makes it difficult to assess them objectively. A good coach will ask the questions that need to be asked. Who genuinely needs this book? Why would they buy it? What will they get from it? What makes it different from the dozens of books already available?

Honest answers now can prevent considerable disappointment later.

#5. You create stronger commercial alignment

If your book is intended to support your business, it needs to be aligned with your business from the start.

Too many authors write the book they feel like writing and only afterwards ask how they can use it to attract clients or generate opportunities. By then, they may discover that the book bears little relationship to the work they actually want to be known for.

An experienced coach will help connect the book’s topic, ideal reader, positioning, intellectual property and next steps to the broader commercial outcomes you want to achieve.

#6. You turn your experience into valuable intellectual property

Most experienced people have far more material than they realise. They have stories, lessons, insights, processes, philosophies and hard-earned wisdom, but it is often scattered across decades of work.

A skilled coach helps you identify what matters, organise it and turn it into clear frameworks and practical ideas. Their role is not to put their thinking into your book. It is to draw out the very best of yours.

This can create intellectual property that extends well beyond the book into speaking, consulting, programmes, workshops and other opportunities.

#7. You have a clear process with supporting systems to follow

Writing a book can feel overwhelming. There are hundreds of decisions to make, and without a process, authors tend to jump around, rewrite endlessly and lose momentum.

A good coach provides a clear pathway, practical frameworks and manageable stages. You know what you are working on, why it matters and what needs to happen next.

Structure doesn’t restrict creativity. In my experience, it gives creativity somewhere useful to go.

#8. You get qualified and honest feedback

Friends and family are rarely the right people to assess your manuscript. They may be supportive, but most cannot explain why a chapter isn’t working, where the argument loses momentum or whether the book is delivering enough value.

A good coach won’t simply cheer you on and tell you everything is wonderful. They will challenge you. They will tell you what is working, what needs more work and what needs to go.

That feedback can be uncomfortable, but it is much better to hear it before the book is published than after.

#9. You make better publishing decisions

Finishing the manuscript is only part of the journey. You still need to navigate editing, design, publishing, printing, distribution, publicity and marketing.

An experienced coach can help you understand the various publishing pathways and choose the one that best suits your book and your objectives. They will generally have trusted contacts, including editors, designers and publishing professionals, who can help you produce the book to a world-class standard.

The wrong publishing decision can cost you dearly. The right advice can save money, time and an enormous amount of heartache. And the publishing options are changing constantly – so having the latest options and the proven contacts can make a big difference.

#10. You increase the likelihood that your book will achieve something meaningful

The goal is not simply to write a book. The world has enough books that merely exist. A world-class book can build trust, establish authority, create opportunities, attract quality clients, change a conversation and make a meaningful difference. But none of that happens automatically, and it certainly doesn’t end on launch day. The book is the start, not the finish.

Working with an experienced book-writing coach does not guarantee success, and anyone who promises that should be avoided. What the right coach will do is help you think more deeply, make better decisions, produce stronger work and significantly improve the odds of your book achieving what you want it to achieve.

And the key word is experienced. Look for someone who understands books, business, readers, publishing and the long game of commercial authorship. Find someone who has done it themselves, helped others do it and is willing to challenge you when you need challenging.

Writing a book is too important to approach casually. If you are going to invest what it takes to become an author, having the right person in your corner is not an indulgence. It is a very wise investment. The bottom line is simple – if you want to write a world class book, find yourself a world class book writing coach.
