Well, here we go. My new book, The Business of Being an Author, officially launches today.
This is my 15th book, and I have to say, this one feels very significant.
Not just because it is a big, deep, practical guide to building a business around a book, but because it represents so much of what I have learned over the past 30 years as a commercial author.
Thirty years of writing books, selling books and leveraging books.
Thirty years of speaking, consulting, coaching, making mistakes, figuring things out, working with publishers, self-publishing, building opportunities from books, and helping more than 1,000 first-time authors bring their own books to life.
This book is for all non fiction authors – those thinking about writing a book right through to those who have a pile of books already written and published.
It is about how to think commercially as an author. How to build trust. How to create opportunities. How to attract better clients. How to use a book as a serious business, brand and authority-building asset.
Inside the book I explore why so many authors never fully utilise their books, what it means to develop a commercial author mindset, the business models available to authors, and the 12 Drivers of Author Success that can guide both new and existing authors.
As always, it takes a team to publish a book properly, and I have been very lucky to have an incredible team around me.
A very big thank you to:
- Julia Kuris, for the elegant and sophisticated cover design.
- Michael Hanrahan and the Publish Central team, for editing, internal layout, print, Amazon, logistics and so much more.
- Maryanne and the team at SquareSound, for the audiobook production.
- Leticia Moran for all of the models, frameworks and promotional material.
- Chris Ashmore for the video and audio production for the associated podcast.
Even after 15 books, I never stop learning about writing and publishing. Creating a world-class book takes time, patience, experience, commitment and a lot of care. It is big, it is complex, and when it is done well, it is deeply satisfying.
So today, I’m feeling proud, grateful and quietly excited.
Thank you to my incredible team, my loyal readers, my clients, my author community, and everyone who has supported my books over the past 30 years. I never take that support for granted.
